    Friday, June 10, 2011 at 12:27AM

Thanks to Paul's reminder, we added a page for topology articles and research. It will take time to organize the large amount of research he left, and I'll take all the help I can get. Please email Maria with suggestions.

    Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 11:26PM

Announcement on the Quantico Orienteering website:

Announcement on the Quantico Orienteering Yahoo! group:

    Dear QOC members,

It is with a very heavy heart that I share the sad news that club member Mikhail "Misha" Matveev passed away suddenly on May 17th.  Originally from Russia, Misha was a math professor at George Mason University.  He and his wife Evgenia and daughter Maria attended many meets over the years and were always happy to volunteer.  He will be missed greatly.

Please see Evgenia's message below for service information. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to their home address:

    Evgenia and Maria Matveeva

Thank you for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
    Heidi Onkst, QOC Volunteer Coordinator

Some stories - if you could not make it to the memorial service

    Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1:10AM

Here are some stories about Misha I shared at the memorial service today. I hope these help us all keep the good memories and appreciate his unique, gentle humor.

    1. When I was about two years old, my dad took me orienteering. Orienteering is a kind of sport where you run in the woods with a map and a compass to find a series of location markers. He put me on his shoulders and ran the second most difficult course, letting me down, just feet away from the control so I could punch his card at the marker. Now, a two-year-old emerging from the bushes at the first control marker on the course must have looked cute to other competitive runners. The same exact two-year-old, emerging from the bushes on the same course, only several seconds behind the best runners, is scary.

    2. Tea is considered cold, and must be microwaved, if more than two minutes have passed since the teapot boiled.

    3. There are two folders, one labeled HW (with an incoming arrow) and another - also labeled HW, but with an outgoing arrow. But - based on some evidence - he does, in fact, talk to students in class.

Evidence of talking in class: this was sourced from rateMyProfessors.com (so beware).

    - doesn't have to try to be funny. It's his accent.

    - He explains very well, but you still need to do a part (half) of hmk to understand the concepts.

    - it was his accent that kept me awake.

    4. Reading a Chinese takeout menu during dinner, while eating homemade Italian food, is normal.
